Arbitration Chambers welcomes two “next generation” arbitrators

Arbitration Chambers, which this month was named Arbitrators Set of the Year at the Legal500 Bar Awards, has welcomed Lindsay Gastrell and Niccolò Landi as arbitrators. They are senior arbitration practitioners, with decades of experience in commercial and investor-state disputes.

Gastrell, who is qualified in New York and in England & Wales, started her legal career at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer representing clients in a range of complex arbitrations. She then served as Legal Counsel at ICSID, where she helped to draft the Centre’s 2022 rules and worked on dozens of investment arbitrations.

For the last three years, Gastrell has been Senior Counsel at Arbitration Chambers, where she has supported senior members with their commercial and investor-state arbitrations, while expanding her own arbitrator practice, which has included matters under the ICC, LCIA, SIAC and JAMS rules. She is also an adjunct professor of law at American University’s Washington College of Law and the Practice Notes Editor of the ICSID Review.

Gastrell co-chairs Mute Off Thursdays, the virtual-discussion group for women in arbitration, co-chairs a subcommittee of the Equal Representation in Arbitration Pledge and serves as rapporteur for ICCA’s Judiciary Committee. She has a JD, magna cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center and a Masters in Global Business Law from Université de Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne and Sciences Po.

Lucy Reed says: “Having watched Lindsay become an international arbitration wizard first at Freshfields and then at ICSID, it was a dream-come-true to have Lindsay join me as an (almost full-time) tribunal secretary at Arbitration Chambers in New York in 2020.  She is one of the rare arbitration all-rounders:  practicing, teaching, writing, mentoring, never standing still.  And now Lindsay is – deservedly – recognized as an experienced arbitrator in her own right, and more than welcome as a full member of Chambers.

Landi has a well-established track record in international commercial arbitration, under both ad hoc and institutional rules, and in investor-state arbitration, and he is appointed regularly as arbitrator.

Landi graduated in law from Siena University and holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from University College Dublin. A member of the Milan Bar, he is admitted to practice before the Italian Supreme Court.  After a number of years with Gianni & Origoni in Milan, Landi founded his own practice, Studio Legal Landi, in 2017.

He lectures on arbitration-related topics at the University of Roma Tre, at the University of Turin and at the International Training Centre of the International Labor Organization in Turin. Landi is fluent in Italian, English and French, and he is listed as a ‘Global Leader’ by Who’s Who Legal in the category Arbitration in 2023.

John Beechey says: “I have had the pleasure of working with Niccolò Landi on a regular basis for the past six years during which time his reputation as a leading member of the new generation of Italian international arbitration practitioners has continued to grow. His appointment as a member of Arbitration Chambers is thoroughly well deserved. I am delighted that he will now have the platform of Arbitration Chambers upon which to build his international profile both in and well beyond Italy and I wish him every success in this new venture.”

Gavin Denton, head of Arbitration Chambers, says: “Both Lindsay and Nicco are hugely experienced and respected members of the international arbitration community.  While we’re a set with many of the world’s leading international arbitrators, we also wish to provide a foundation for the next generation of outstanding lawyers as they grow their practices as full-time arbitrators.  As such, we are delighted to welcome Lindsay and Nicco as full members of Chambers.”
